The goal of an AAC evaluation is to determine if an AAC communication system is appropriate for an individual. The goal of AAC treatment is to use AAC as a communication mode to increase an individual’s functional communication skills.
Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) is defined as “all forms of communication (other than oral speech) that are used to express thoughts, needs, wants, and ideas” (ASHA, 2016). Individuals with complex communication needs (CCN) use AAC to increase his or her functional communication skills, thus improving his/her receptive and expressive language skills. UA now has an AAC specialist who completed pediatric AAC evaluations and treatment. High and low-tech options are used during assessments and therapy.
